The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
