Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.

Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.

When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
